A Bamboo Sanctuary in Hong Kong references surrounding bamboo forest

Local studio Canter and Gallop Design has clad a Hong Kong home in wood to create "a quiet abode in a bamboo forest".

Perched on a cliff overlooking the sea and next to a bamboo forest, the residence was designed to be a serene sanctuary.

Inspired by Kyoto's peaceful bamboo forests, Canter and Gallop Design aimed to provide the owners, a family of four, a retreat that would encourage mindfulness.

"The design incorporates rustic materials, subtle textures, and thoughtful elements to reflect their love of nature and spiritual sentiments," the studio said.

"We want to allow our residents to slow down and have a deep dialogue with nature," it added.

The designers placed a floor-to-ceiling shoe cabinet with hand-glazed green ceramic tiles, in a colour reminiscent of bamboo leaves, by the entrance of A Bamboo Sanctuary.

Wood was used for the walls and floors, as well as for the home's fitted furniture, giving the home an organic feel.

To create a cosy atmosphere, the studio opted for craftsman styles and natural textures, such as warm grey hand-brushed gesso paint and softly padded walls, contrasted by the green tiles.

"A considered materials strategy was used to satisfy the client's keen interest in wood while avoiding a depressing, one-dimensional design," Canter and Gallop Design explained.

"Envisioned as a quiet abode in a bamboo forest, we challenged ourselves to create a harmonious dialogue between the architecture and furniture," the studio added.

"We have carefully selected a number of interior elements that are appropriate for this area."

The furniture and fixtures selected by Canter and Gallop Design were also mainly made of wood, including a wood-and-stone dining table. Contrasting stone coffee tables and small metal hardware, used on door pulls and cabinet pulls, add interest to the interior.

A Bamboo Sanctuary by Canter and Gallop Design won Dezeen Awards China 2024 interiors project of the year. It was also named home interior of the year.

Other recent Hong Kong projects include a "more emotionally engaging McDonald's" and a bar informed by underground cisterns.
