Five innovative and practical modular furniture designs

Our latest roundup looks at modular furniture pieces that are both practical and surprising, ranging from an alternative to bespoke cabinetry to a furniture system made up of squishy balls.

Amoreba is comprised of hundreds of soft, upholstered balls that can be combined in a wide range of configurations.
Architecture and design studio Golem used custom-designed software to model three-dimensional surfaces for the modular furniture system, which the company says is tailored to "contemporary, non-conformist lifestyles".

Created by industrial design duo SF-SO, the metal shelves in the Thin collection are just 1.6 millimetres thick but can support the equivalent of a baby elephant in weight.
The slender modular shelving panels come in a variety of colours and have screws that slot through pre-drilled holes in the folded sections so that users can easily build the furniture themselves.

Modular furniture system by Lozi
This year's London Design Festival saw plywood specialist Lozi open up its Hackney Road showroom to reveal its new modular system, which includes clean-lined wardrobes and a fold-down bed.
The pieces are meant to be an alternative to bespoke cabinetry
They let users "mix and match individual standalone units to create a freestanding piece that mimics fitted joinery, like how Ikea sells their iconic Billy Bookcase design," Lozi founder Soroush Pourhashemi told Dezeen.

Omi Series 2 Stool by Omi Collective
The sculptural Omi Series 2 Stool, with its striking Klein-blue colour, was designed by Lagos studio Omi Collective as a reinterpretation of traditional African seating,
The six-legged stool can be divided into three standalone modules, which are connected by steel rods.
"We believe that the stool's modularity and its ability to be shared, taken apart, reassembled and adapted, naturally encourages community and shared ownership," Omi Collective founder Olorunfemi Adewuyi told Dezeen.
