Dezeen Showroom: Australian designer Adam Goodrum drew on a classic childhood game to create this lighting collection for design brand Rakumba.

The Hangman lighting collection includes table, floor and ceiling lights, each composed of an extruded aluminium rod that can be kinked into different geometric compositions using a specially designed articulated joint.

The Hangman lighting is based on the eponymous childhood drawing game

The lighting designs are based on the pen-and-paper game Hangman, and channel both the playfulness of the central stick figure and the typographic quality of the word-based game mechanic.

"I wanted to distil the feeling of putting a pencil to a page, where the possibilities are endless," said Goodrum. "The range is about versatility, about your own imagination, to be used like a 3D drawing."

The body of each light can be rotated into different geometric compositions

The Hangman lighting's joint is created through a simple 45-degree cut that allows for a full circular rotation and incorporates a satisfying "click" when the element is locked into each of its possible positions.

The light source appears as a refined glowing tip to the pieces, which are available in two finishes including a raw polished aluminium that is designed to patina elegantly over time.

"Hangman has the potential to be a future design icon," said Rakumba head of design Dan Treacy. "It is a piece that charms with a mischievous edge but hiding below the surface is a rigorously considered product."
