The vivid architectural style of Luis Barragán spurred design studio Holzrausch to add bright pops of pink, yellow and orange to this holiday home in Mallorca, Spain.

The residence, called Casa da Praia, was built in the late 1970s but now belongs to a couple based in Munich, who frequently visit with friends and loved ones.

When Holzrausch began the renovation, the studio discovered several features worth preserving, from its split-level layout to the sloped ceilings and pine wood panelling.

As a result, the studio largely made understated changes such as covering the home's "generic" white facade in clay plaster and overlaying the floors with micro cement.

"The brief was less a rigid style prescription and more a clear sensibility: warm, relaxed, light-filled, with a strong relationship to design and art, but without showroom coolness," the studio told Dezeen.

"Our intervention was less about drastic structural moves and more about recalibrating surfaces, built-ins and transitions."

The owners had just one specific request.

As they were long-term admirers of Mexican architect Luis Barragan and his implementation of vivid colour-block walls, they asked Holzrausch to find a way to translate this into "architectural moments" throughout their own home.

Holzrausch also kept the home's sloped ceilings

An example of this is seen in the kitchen, where the studio applied glossy sunshine-yellow paint to the ceiling and rendered the room's tall hinged doors in hot pink.

These vivid hues provide a bold contrast to timber cabinetry and grey stone countertops.

"The palette is structured in layers: timber and warm earth tones as the calm base, then a few precise, almost graphic colour insertions," explained the studio.

"The result isn't driven by loudness, but by hierarchy – quiet materials, crisp craft, and a handful of colour moments that land exactly where they need to."

Hand-cut tiles and terrazzo sinks feature in the bathrooms

Beyond the kitchen is a dining area, followed by a sitting room with a mustard-coloured sunken sofa.

Hand-cut Spanish tiles were used to create all-yellow surfaces in the home's bathrooms, which also include terrazzo sinks crafted by local manufacturer Huguet.

Another yellow wall features in the main living area, centred by a patchwork Mah Jong sofa from Roche Bobois.

A corner window offers views of the outdoor pool and deck area, which has a magenta-coloured wall running around its edge. Just in front sits a taller, burnt-orange wall with a showerhead affixed to it, so that inhabitants can rinse off after swimming.

Other residences on the charming island of Mallorca include The Lovers' House by Isla Architects, the facade of which is punctuated with openings that frame views of the surrounding landscape.

There's also Alaro House by Company Studio, which is fronted by large wooden shutters that let air and light through to the interior.
