Marmoleum Cocoa flooring by Forbo Flooring
Dezeen Showroom: surface brand Forbo Flooring's Marmoleum Cocoa flooring makes use of unwanted cocoa shells – an oft-wasted by-product of the cocoa industry.
Marmoleum Cocoa is an evolution of Forbo Flooring's existing Marmoleum range, which is made from up to 98 per cent natural raw materials, including linseed oil, wood flour and jute.
In addition to these, Marmoleum Cocoa contains cocoa shells, which give each of its 16 colourways a distinctive look and feel that the brand describes as "natural yet contemporary".
"By integrating these shells into the flooring, we give new life to an underutilised resource while contributing to a more circular economy," said Forbo Flooring.
The flooring is the result of the brand's collaboration with Dutch-founded social enterprise Kumasi Commodity Innovations. While Forbo Flooring makes use of surplus cocoa shells, Kumasi uses cocoa fruit juice to create its beverages.
"Through its recent partnership with Kumasi, Forbo Flooring sources cocoa shells in a way that directly benefits cocoa farming communities," said the brand.
