2s.design develops Equihero animal-centered inhalation masks

 

Warsaw-based industrial design studio 2s.design introduces Equihero, a series of anatomical inhalation masks developed to address the physiological and behavioral needs of horses during respiratory treatments. Based on ‘More-Than-Human Design’ principles, the project shifts the focus from human-centered usability toward animal comfort, combining digital modeling, veterinary research, and iterative prototyping to create a less stressful nebulization process.

 

The project originated from a practical challenge encountered by the studio’s founders while treating their own horse’s respiratory illness. Existing solutions were either costly veterinary systems or unsuitable alternatives that caused discomfort for the animal. Equihero was developed as a response to this gap, exploring how veterinary equipment could better adapt to the anatomy and behavior of horses.

Equihero balances veterinary performance and equine comfort

 

The design by industrial design studio 2s.design considers two users simultaneously: the horse, as a sensitive and easily startled patient, and the caretaker, who requires an efficient and reliable system for applying the treatment. To understand the complex geometry of the equine head, 2s.design began the process using a digital horse phantom, allowing the team to analyze anatomical relationships and develop four possible design approaches.

 

Following the digital phase, the studio collaborated with a veterinarian to test the concepts in real stable environments. Initial 3D printed prototypes were evaluated on live horses to verify proportions and fit, followed by transparent resin prototypes that enabled direct observation of breathing patterns inside the mask. This process allowed the designers to examine seal pressure, nostril movement, and overall comfort during inhalation. The final design incorporates several micro-ergonomic adjustments developed through testing. Straps were positioned to avoid pressure on the sensitive occipital area, while emergency magnetic clips were integrated to allow quick release in case of sudden movement.

 

Equihero combines medical functionality with a form language adapted to the equestrian environment. The streamlined silhouette features embossed side details that add structural definition, while the color palette draws from natural tones including sand, peat, clay, and charcoal. The resulting design balances clinical performance with a warmer visual expression, positioning the inhalation mask as a piece of veterinary equipment designed around the anatomy and experience of the horse.
