ELEVATE ALL-NEW NISSAN MICRA: THE SIGNATURE EDITION
Nissan, in collaboration with designboom, has announced the 11 finalists of Elevate All-New Nissan MICRA: The Signature Edition, an international design competition launched on August 11, 2025. Open to creatives worldwide, the contest invited designers, architects, students, and visual thinkers to reinterpret the exterior identity of the all-new Nissan MICRA without altering its original structure. Following a multi-phase selection process reviewed jointly by Nissan and designboom, the finalists now move forward as contenders for a Signature Edition that will be the final winner set to be revealed on March 30, 2026.

ELEVATING THE ALL-NEW NISSAN MICRA’S AUDACIOUS PERSONALITY
The competition was conceived as a platform for translating the all-new Nissan MICRA’s audacious personality into a refined, elevated visual language. Participants were asked to work within tight constraints, retaining the car’s body, windows, wheels, and lighting, while elevating its presence through color, graphics, patterns, materials, and surface treatments. Across more than a thousand initial registrations, proposals demonstrated how subtle interventions, bold chromatic decisions, and thoughtful detailing could shift perception and identity without structural change.
Structured in three phases, the contest began with an open call for portfolios and creative statements, from which approximately 100 participants were selected to develop full proposals. These were further refined through jury feedback before narrowing the field to the final group. The iterative format encouraged designers to respond critically to guidance, strengthening conceptual clarity and sharpening what it means to create a true ‘Signature Edition’ rather than a purely decorative treatment.
Among the finalists, recurring themes point to a shared sensitivity toward culture, movement, and material expression. Some proposals draw from Japanese craftsmanship and philosophy, translating ideas of imperfection, restraint, and tactility into contemporary automotive design. Others explore motion through gradients, waves, or pixelated graphics that reference energy, technology, and electric mobility. Several finalists extend their concepts beyond the exterior skin, proposing cohesive interior accents or functional accessories that reinforce a holistic identity.

NISSAN AND DESIGNBOOM’S SELECTION OF FINALISTS
Rather than loud transformations, many of the shortlisted designs favor balance between boldness and elegance, experimentation and recognizability. Graphic signatures echo headlamp geometry, rooflines become canvases for perspective-based patterns, and restrained palettes are activated through contrast, texture, or metallic detail. Together, the finalists illustrate how a compact urban vehicle can act as a cultural object, carrying narrative and emotion through design.
Founded in 1933, Nissan is a global automotive brand that connects drivers to bold, innovative design in the most exciting way possible.
