Macaron modular sofa by Bert Plantagie and Mecanoo
Dezeen Showroom: Dutch design brand Bert Plantagie has collaborated with architecture studio Mecanoo to design Macaron, a modular sofa system modelled on and named after the famous French confection.
Launching at Masterly during Milan design week, Macaron was designed by Bert Plantagie and Mecanoo as a flexible seating system that can be reconfigured to suit multiple environments.
According to the team, the modules are characterised by curves and layers intended to playfully emulate a macaron, the famous meringue-based sweet treat originating in Paris.
"True to its name, the modular sofa system is engineered as a functional macaron," said the team.
"This modular, circular, and layered construction is the core of the collection's identity, offering a configuration for every taste," it continued.
"To ensure future adaptability and resilience over time, the collection prioritises flexibility; this layering allows users to mix and match individual pieces to create an identity tailored to their surroundings."
The Macaron modules come in various shapes and sizes, united by chunky silhouettes and curved edges. They have wooden frames, available in walnut and oak, and are covered in bio-based textiles in a range of colours.
The modules can be joined together or be used independently to create a variety of formations, which the team said makes Macaron "suitable for use at home, at work, in airports, at universities, or within museums".
The showcase at Milan design week will display six possible arrangements to illustrate the collection's versatility.
