Promotion: flooring has an important role when designing spaces that address the growing need for individual focus time, says soft flooring specialist Modulyss.

Modulyss explained that as people's working behaviour continues to evolve, traditional office interiors are falling short as they fail to provide suitable acoustics.

"Poor sound absorption can lead to interrupting a worker's focused time or can result in reverberations that disrupt meetings," said Modulyss. "Without proper sound management, flexible spaces can quickly descend into chaos."

Flexible working spaces such as open-plan offices often create noise, according to Modulyss.

The brand explained that companies need to incorporate effective acoustic solutions – such as soft flooring – into their workspaces, which address the versatile ways people work, from group collaboration to individual focus time.

Soft flooring can help control reverberation by absorbing unwanted sounds and trapping and dampening sound vibrations. This minimises echoes and leads to clearer speech making it easier for workers to communicate and concentrate.

The right flooring can reduce noise and contribute to quieter, more peaceful environments, which is also important when designing a neuro-inclusive space. However, Modulyss warns that overused acoustics can result in "a dry acoustic environment, which lacks warmth and natural reverberation".

"No one likes a room that echoes like a cave, right?" said acoustic expert and associate professor at Eindhoven University of Technology, Cédric Van Hoorickx. "By strategically incorporating sound-absorbing materials into the architectural design, architects can exert precise control over the reverberation characteristics of a space."

Modulyss' soft flooring aims to absorb sound while allowing the flexibility that contemporary workspaces demand.

To ensure its flooring absorbs sound effectively the company has launched acoustic backing comfortBACK ECO into its flooring designs.

ComfortBACK ECO is made from 62 per cent recycled materials and results in a 65 per cent improvement in sound absorption, according to the brand.

The product is lightweight to lower carbon emissions during its production, transportation and assembly. It is designed to ensure rooms are soundproofed but are comfortable on the foot and reduce muscle fatigue.

The backing also holds a Cradle-to-Cradle gold level certificate and is compatible with Modulyss' end-of-life recycling programme, enabling it to be fully recycled at the end of its lifespan.

The brand also has several other flooring backings listed on its website.

Many of Modulyss' collections can be equipped with comfortBACK ECO, such as its Plus collection group, which includes Artus, Forma, and Monos, and its Modus collection group, including Rust, Ivy, Fade and Trace.

The company has a number of online resources focused on the importance of acoustics in architecture.

It will also publish several talks in 2025, with speakers including the founder of acoustic consultancy agency KP Acoustics, Kyriakos Papanagiotoul; acoustic ambassador at Impact Acoustic, Daniel Verlooven; and consultant, researcher and teacher at Level Acoustics and Vibration, Remy Wenmaekers.
