STUDIO RUEI designs hybrid AUTOMOTIVE GALLERY and CAFÉ IN WAN CHAI

Designed by Yuisze Wong of Studio Ruei, Macchina is a hybrid gallery café in Hong Kong’s Wan Chai district that integrates automotive exhibition spaces with hospitality programming. Framing vehicles as cultural and industrial artifacts rather than commercial commodities, the interior provides a social venue where automotive design, mechanical engineering, and specialty coffee converge.

CONCRETE, BRUSHED METAL, AND TIMBER FORM INDUSTRIAL INTERIOR

Behind a restrained street-facing envelope, expansive glazed apertures create direct sightlines into the main display bay, framing a single vehicle as the focal sculpture, inaugurated by the Aston Martin Valkyrie. Studio Ruei organizes the internal layout and circulation through calibrated visual corridors, connecting the central vehicular plinth to surrounding lounge seating, curated display cases, and the primary espresso bar. Rotating vehicular displays introduce distinct engineering narratives over time without requiring physical alterations to the surrounding architecture.

  • ADAPTABLE CEILING lights AND ACOUSTIC PANELs BALANCE AMBIANCE

Drawing from Brutalist precedents, the spatial enclosure utilizes a tactile palette of textured concrete, brushed metal, and natural timber, pairing industrial finishes with precise architectural reveals that reflect automotive manufacturing tolerances. Overhead, an integrated ceiling grid pairs diffused wash lighting with directional spotlighting to delineate vehicle surfaces and contours under studio-grade illumination. Recessed acoustic panels across the walls and ceiling temper reverberation, balancing acoustic comfort across the café with the focused atmosphere of an exhibition gallery.
