mcdonald’s recycles happy meal toys into wireless mouse shaped like french fries
MCDONALD’S AND LENOVO PUT FRENCH FRIES ON THE DESKTOP
McDonald’s China is giving its fries a place beside the keyboard. Developed with Lenovo, the brand’s French fry-shaped wireless mouse translates its familiar red carton and yellow contents into a computer accessory, incorporating plastic recovered from old Happy Meal toys. The collaboration brings together two recognizable features of the fast-food experience: the packaging that holds lunch and the small plastic object that tends to outlast it. This time, the latter gets something useful to do.
The design keeps the visual shorthand intact. A red lower shell carries the Golden Arches, while molded yellow fries rise across the top, giving the mouse an uneven silhouette that departs from the anonymous curves of conventional office hardware. The food reference determines the object’s shape as well as its colors, turning a piece of takeaway packaging into something intended to stay on the desk.

RECYCLED HAPPY MEAL TOYS FORM THE MOUSE’S PLASTIC SHELL
According to the product information, more than 60% of the exterior casing is made from recycled plastic sourced from collected Happy Meal toys. Lenovo describes a process involving sorting, shredding, purification, and material modification to produce recycled ABS suitable for manufacturing. The toys lose their original forms along the way: their material returns to production, eventually taking on another distinctly McDonald’s identity.
The collaboration sits within McDonald’s China’s Reimagine Good Things initiative, launched in 2021 to explore new uses for recovered materials. Previous products have included trays and flowerpots, extending the program into everyday objects. Here, the shift from toy to computer accessory also changes the intended user and setting. Something once handed out with a children’s meal reappears among the equipment of adult working life, retaining a little of its former playfulness.

WIRELESS CONNECTIVITY HIDES BENEATH THE FRENCH FRY SHAPE
Behind the sculpted fries, the mouse offers Bluetooth and 2.4GHz wireless connectivity, quiet-click buttons, and three adjustable sensitivity settings. A 380mAh rechargeable battery powers the device. Its accompanying carrying pouch unfolds into a mouse pad, allowing the accessory’s protective cover to become part of the desktop setup. The specifications give the novelty object a practical role, although its distinctive outline alone says little about comfort over a full working day.
This limited release places the mouse between functional equipment and branded collectible, with its appeal resting on an immediately legible transformation. A carton normally associated with a brief stop for food becomes an object designed for repeated use. Whether that makes answering emails more appetizing is another matter.
