Soft Stone sofa by Gabriel Tan for ClassiCon
Dezeen Showroom: German design brand ClassiCon worked with Singaporean designer Gabriel Tan on a round-cornered modular sofa that takes cues from both sculpture and architecture.
The Soft Stone sofa comprises 11 different modules and is based on the staggered stone terraces in Porto's Parque da Cidade as well as the work of American sculptor Isamu Noguchi.

Tan aimed to imbue each module with a balance of softness and geometry: "I wanted to capture the feeling of resting on something solid and monumental that nevertheless feels completely natural and soft," said Tan.
This is corroborated by references to Noguchi's 1970 sculpture Illusion of the Fifth Stone, which sees rounded, solid rocks that seem to interlock together to create a whole. The sofa's armrests connect into the back of the sofa in a similar way.

Together, the Munich-based brand and Tan opted to work with fellow German brand Zimmer + Rhode, selecting four fabrics from its catalogue for users to select from for the upholstery.
The fabrics are Tinto, which has a finish that is "reminiscent of a wet stone drying in the sun", bouclé-textured Pamir RE, two-tone, subtly-sheened Chenille Andro Plu and neutral linen Antoni. Bespoke upholstery fabrics and leather covers are available upon request.
"Another feature of the Soft Stone sofa are the deliberate folds in the cover – this detail breaks with the strict linearity of conventional upholstery and lends the sofa an Italian nonchalance that underlines its luxurious character and makes the softness of the design visually palpable at first glance," said ClassiCon.
