monolithic black timber retreat frames panoramic views of ukraine’s carpathian mountains
Black timber retreat opens toward the Carpathian landscape
Designed by SHOVK, the Mountain Retreat House is situated on the open slopes of the Ukrainian Carpathian Mountains, where its compact volume responds to the surrounding landscape. Conceived as a single-family holiday home, the project adopts a restrained architectural language that integrates with the mountainous setting while framing expansive views across the valley.
The exterior is clad in black timber, a natural material selected for its tactile quality and ability to change with seasonal light and weather conditions. The entrance elevation is deliberately enclosed, forming a solid facade that reinforces privacy and creates a clear distinction between the approach and the interior. In contrast, the opposite side of the house opens toward the landscape through full-height glazing, allowing panoramic views of the Carpathian Mountains to become an integral part of the living spaces.

Material simplicity defines the mountain retreat by SHOVK
The changing landscape, from snow-covered winters to green summer slopes, continuously shapes the atmosphere of the interior. The house is organized around a simple program that includes two bedrooms, a private study, and an open-plan living, dining, and kitchen area. Positioned at the center of this shared space, a fireplace acts as both a functional heat source and the focal point of the interior during colder months.
Defined by a pitched roof, dark timber cladding, and a compact geometric form, the building establishes a clear architectural identity while maintaining a restrained presence within its natural surroundings. The project, developed by SHOVK Studio, emphasizes material simplicity, controlled openings, and a direct relationship with the landscape, using architecture to frame views and support seasonal living in the Carpathian Mountains.
