designboom job position available: junior social media specialist
Role: junior social media specialist
Department: designboom
Location: remote
Reports to: Senior Social Media Manager
about designboom
Our mission is to bring together the worlds of design, architecture, art, and technology, fostering creative thought and global dialogue. We are driven by a philosophy of ‘Utopian Optimism’ and a ‘What If’ mindset, believing in the power of design to shape a better future.
Core beliefs and ethos
The successful candidate will be an active embodiment of our core philosophy. We are a catalyst, a movement of makers, believers, and optimists. We believe that design is not decoration, but transformation. It is how we learn to see, connect, and rise. Our approach is Utopian Optimism: a belief that one idea, one spark, can outshine the noise and move us forward. We believe in building the light, turning energy into beauty, and chaos into clarity. This movement begins with the thought: What if!
designboom values (what we seek)
We expect the designboom junior social media specialist to champion our three core values in their leadership and execution:
- Intentionally Curious: They ask the right questions during the production phase to ensure we aren’t just hitting a deadline, but actually answering the client’s core need.
- Disrupt Playfully: They find creative ways to solve logistical problems. When a timeline is tight, they find the “playful disruption” that makes it work without compromising quality.
- Fearlessly Meaningful: They are the guardian of quality. They are unafraid to push back on content that feels flat or corporate, ensuring every published piece carries the designboom mission.
the role: junior social media editor
We are looking for a hands-on, creative, and platform-native Social Media specialist to join the designboom team. This is a production-first role built for someone who lives and breathes social media — someone who is always watching what is working on social media, knows exactly how to cut a reel that stops the scroll, and takes real pride in the craft of every post.
You will work directly within the social media team, sitting alongside our Senior Social Media Manager and reporting to our Editor-in-Chief. Your day-to-day is the engine of our social output: scheduling, publishing, creating short-form video content, editing assets, and ensuring our channels are always alive, on-brand, and on time. You will collaborate closely with the Head of Social Media, who owns the strategic direction, as well as the editorial team, to turn stories and moments into compelling platform-native content.
This role is not for someone who wants to watch from the sidelines. It is for a creator who is ready to produce, experiment, and grow with one of the most recognised design media brands in the world.
key responsibilities
1. daily publishing & platform management
- Publish stories, reels, and carousels on Instagram & TikTok — maintaining cadence, format quality, and editorial timing
- Post and manage content on LinkedIn and Facebook, adapting tone and format to each platform’s audience
- Support community management by monitoring comments and flagging engagement opportunities to the team
- Maintain the content calendar in collaboration with the Head of Social Media and Senior Social Media Manager
- Ensure assets are published on schedule, correctly formatted for each platform, and free of errors
2. video creation & content production
- Create and edit reels and short-form videos using tools such as CapCut, Instagram Edits, and similar platforms
- Produce visual assets and graphics for social media using Adobe Photoshop and other creative tools
- Repurpose editorial content into platform-native formats, ensuring each piece feels native to the channel it lives on
- Propose and prototype new recurring content formats aligned with the Utopian Optimism north star and current platform trends
- Stay on top of trends — particularly on TikTok — and bring fresh format ideas to the team on a regular basis
3. platform & audience fluency
- Actively use social media as a creative person. Understanding sound, pacing, trend cycles, and what drives retention
- Bring firsthand knowledge of how 18–25-year-old audiences engage with content, and apply this to designboom’s TikTok growth strategy
- Identify emerging formats and cultural moments relevant to design, architecture, art, and technology
- Support the growth of designboom’s TikTok presence from near-zero toward the 50K follower target for 2026
4. collaboration & events
- Collaborate with the editorial team to turn press previews, events, and exclusive access into compelling real-time social content
- Work with the Head of Social Media and Senior Social Media Manager to ensure assets for campaigns and brand partnerships are delivered on time
- Travel to key moments in the design calendar — such as Milan Design Week, Venice Biennale, and other flagship events — to report live on the ground
- Support sponsored content delivery by ensuring campaign assets are published correctly and on schedule
what we’re looking for
- 1–2 years of hands-on experience in social media execution or content production (agency, in-house, or a strong personal/freelance track record)
- Proven ability to create and edit engaging short-form video content, with a portfolio or examples you can share
- Native or fluent English speaker
- Working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop for asset creation and editing
- Proficiency with mobile-first editing tools including CapCut and Instagram Edits
- Active and genuine presence on TikTok — you understand the platform from the inside out
- Familiarity with Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, and Pinterest as publishing platforms
- Strong eye for aesthetics and a feel for what looks and sounds right in a design-forward context
- Reliable, organised, and capable of managing multiple publishing deadlines simultaneously
personal qualities
- A genuine enthusiasm for design, architecture, art, or technology — you do not need to be an expert, but you need to care
- A self-starter who thrives in a fast-moving environment and can take initiative without waiting to be told
- Comfortable working across a small, collaborative team and adapting your output based on strategic direction
- Willing and able to travel for key events throughout the year
- Curious, playful, and unafraid to pitch a weird idea — the best content often starts with ‘What if?’
