Alexis Dornier references Moonraker concept art for ring-shaped villa in Bali

Architect Alexis Dornier referenced concept sketches for a James Bond film to create Villa Omah Prana, a doughnut-shaped house in Bali that gives each space views out over the surrounding forest.
Located in the highlands of Payangan, the 475-square-metre circular home is organised around a raised brick planter at its heart, while the perimeter is wrapped by a walkway shaded by the eaves of a large wooden-shingle roof.
Dornier found an unlikely source of inspiration for Villa Omah Prana's form in the concept art of the space station in the 1970s James Bond film Moonraker.

"The project follows one clear idea: a ring-shaped plan that places all rooms along the perimeter, orienting them toward the surrounding landscape," said Alexis Dornier.
"Some of the curvature and the atmosphere reference early Ken Adam sketches for Moonraker – especially the clarity of a bold geometric move and the way space can feel choreographed without being theatrical," he added.
"The geometry behaves almost like ripples expanding from one moment of impact – simple, readable, and consistent."

The ring-shaped plan of Villa Omah Prana has been kept one-room deep, with internal spaces sandwiched between the villa's perimeter walkway and a ring-shaped corridor that surrounds the large brick planter at its centre.
Bedrooms occupy more sealed, air-conditioned spaces that face outward, while the open-plan living, dining and kitchen area leads out to both a curved pool and terrace on the home's northeastern edge and to the internal courtyard.
Dornier looked to Bali's rich tradition of weaving for the villa's walls, the dark brickwork of which has been laid in a herringbone pattern and incorporates perforated sections that filter light from the courtyard into the bedrooms.
Above, the courtyard's ceiling is clad in timber planks that follow the home's circular form, sloping gently downwards towards a central lightwell that allows natural light and rainfall into the planter.

In Villa Omah Prana's living space, a counter, dining table and seating area have all been organised on radial axes, with furniture and carpentry finished in pale timber.
"Brickwork laid in herringbone patterns, interlaced wall textures, and subtle geometric motifs reinterpret local craft in a contemporary way," said Dornier.
"These details add tactility and depth without overwhelming the architecture. The house invites close inspection; it is rich in detail but remains calm and grounded," he added.

Originally born in Germany, Dornier moved his studio to Bali in 2013. The studio has since completed many projects in the area, including a trio of stilted guesthouses in the rainforest that look out over the surrounding treetops.
Elsewhere in Bali, MORQ and Studio Wenden recently completed the Further Hotel and Sheila Man transformed her own Bali home into a design-led guesthouse.
